What to Write in a New Year's Eve Message: Ideas and Examples
How to write a short, warm New Year's Eve message for a partner, friends, family and colleagues, with examples, a tone quiz and a plan for the night.
New Year’s Eve is the one night when everyone looks ahead at the same moment, and a short message can make someone feel remembered. This guide helps you write one that sounds like you. For more ways to send a seasonal wish, see the Christmas and winter page.
Decide what the message is for
A New Year’s Eve message usually does one of three jobs. It can look back with thanks, it can look ahead with hope, or it can make the person laugh as the clock ticks over. Pick one. A message that tries to do all three becomes a speech. If you are not sure which to choose, think about who is reading: a partner or close friend will appreciate the first, someone starting something new needs the second, and an old friend often loves the third.
Three jobs a New Year's Eve message can do
| The job | Best for | An opening line |
|---|---|---|
| Look back with thanks | Partners, close friends, family | “Before the year ends, thank you for being there for all of it.” |
| Look ahead with hope | Anyone starting something new | “I hope the next one is gentler on you than this one was.” |
| Make them laugh | Old friends and cousins | “Resolution one: see you more. Resolution two: see you even more.” |
Pick one. A message that tries to be funny, grateful and hopeful all at once turns into a speech.
Make it about the year
The best New Year’s Eve messages point at something real. A trip that went wrong in a funny way, a hard month you got through together, a dinner you still talk about. One small detail gives the message a place in time, and it shows you were really thinking of them. A general toast to “health and happiness” is fine, but it could have come from anyone.
Write for the person, not the occasion
Avoid copying a verse from a card. Use the words you would use if you were standing next to them. If you normally tease each other, a gentle joke is welcome. If they have had a hard year, keep the tone calm and kind and leave out the cheer. “I hope next year is gentler on you” is better than a loud “best year ever”.
Messages for different people
Partners. Be specific and quiet. A message that names one thing you are grateful for lands better than a big declaration.
Friends. Warm and a little funny. Mention a shared joke, and promise something you will actually do, such as a dinner or a trip.
Family. Say what you are thankful for and who you will be thinking of at midnight. If someone is missing from the table, say so gently.
Colleagues and clients. Thank them for something specific, wish them a good break and keep it short.
People far away. Say what you will be doing at midnight and that you wish they were there. Promise a call on the first, and keep the promise.
Try it: pick who it is for
Use one as it is, or swap in a detail from your own year.
Partner
Midnight is my favorite part of the year because it always comes with you beside me. Thank you for the laughter, the patience and the pancakes. Happy New Year.
If I could keep one moment from this year, it would be the ordinary Tuesday when we laughed for an hour at nothing. Here is to a thousand more. Happy New Year.
Friends
To the friend who answers at any hour: thank you. May next year bring you good luck, better weather and at least one trip we actually book. Happy New Year!
Look at us, still here and still laughing. Whatever happens next year, I know we will figure it out over a long dinner. Happy New Year, my friend.
Family
Wishing everyone at your table a calm, healthy and happy year. I will be thinking of you at midnight, and I will call on the first. Love you all.
Thank you for being the people I can always come home to, even when home is a phone call away. Happy New Year, and give everyone a hug from me.
Colleagues
Thank you for a year of good work and good humor. Enjoy the night, rest well and come back to a year full of things that go right. Happy New Year.
It has been a pleasure working with you this year. I hope the break is a long one and the year ahead is a good one. Happy New Year to you and your family.
Far away
Different time zone, same sky. I will be watching the fireworks and thinking of you. Let's pick a date for our next visit before January is over. Happy New Year.
I wish I could clink glasses with you at midnight. Until I can, here is a sky of sparks and a very big thank you for this year.
Copy a message, then paste it into the tool and change a detail so it is theirs. Send it with fireworks
Keep it short
Two to four sentences are enough. A message sent near midnight is read in a few seconds, often one-handed, and a short one is more likely to be read twice. If you have more to say, say it in a call on New Year’s Day.
What to leave out
A few things are better left unsaid at midnight. Skip a long list of everything that went wrong this year, because it turns a celebration into a review. Skip pressure, such as “this is the year you finally…”, unless the two of you have joked about it before. Skip anything that sounds like a mass-forwarded chain message, since people can tell. And skip a surprise that someone else is meant to announce, such as news about a baby or a new job. If a sentence would make you wince if a stranger read it over the person’s shoulder, rewrite it or take it out.
Not sure what tone to take?
Tone is the part people overthink. If you are unsure, the quiz below picks a style from how well you know the person and what the mood is where you are.
Quiz: which kind of message suits you?
Four questions, one answer. Each result points to something you can send tonight.
A heartfelt message
Look back with thanks, mention one specific moment from the year and finish with a hope for the next one. Keep it to three sentences, and write it the way you would say it face to face.
A playful message
Lead with a joke only the two of you will get, then end with one warm line so it does not read as a meme. Short and quick is the whole point.
A polite, warm message
Thank them for something specific, wish them a proper break and keep the tone friendly but not personal. Two sentences are plenty. For a whole team, see the guide on writing a corporate holiday greeting.
Check the details
Check names and spelling, and make sure the message does not mention something private. If you are sending a link, remember that anyone who has it can read the message. It is also worth checking the date. New Year’s Eve 2026 is on Thursday, 31 December.
Before you send it
0 of 5 ticked
Ready to send. Launch the fireworks.
When to send it
The classic time is just before or just after midnight, but that is also when networks are busiest and attention is split. If you want to be sure it is seen, send it in the evening and let the person open it when they are ready. A link that plays when it is opened does not need to arrive at the stroke of twelve to feel right.
A plan for New Year's Eve
- A few days beforeWrite your messageYou have more patience now than you will at 11:50 p.m.
- Thursday, 31 December, daytimeSend the link earlyIt plays when it is opened, not when it is sent, so they can save it for midnight.
- Thursday, 31 December, eveningCheck their time zoneMidnight arrives hours earlier or later for people far away.
- MidnightPut the phone down for a minuteHugs first, messages second.
- Friday, 1 JanuaryReply to the repliesA short thank you on the first is a nice second message.
New Year's Eve 2026 is on Thursday, 31 December, and New Year's Day is the next day.
A short example
Happy New Year, Sam. This year had a few hard weeks, and you were the person I called each time. Thank you for that. I hope the next one is kind to you, and I hope we finally book that trip. Love, Alex.
Quick answers
What should I write in a New Year's Eve message?
Pick one job: say thank you for the year, share a hope for the next one or make them laugh. Add one real detail, such as a trip or a joke you share, and keep it to two to four sentences.
When should I send a New Year's Eve message?
Any time from the morning of 31 December works. If you send a link that plays when it is opened, you can send it early and let the person save it for midnight. A short message just after midnight also lands well.
Should I mention resolutions?
Only if they are shared or funny. A resolution you make together, such as seeing each other more, is warm. Someone else's resolution is best left to them.
What do I write for someone I have not spoken to in a while?
Keep it light and kind. Say you were thinking of them, mention one good memory and wish them a happy new year. Do not apologize for the silence. A warm hello is enough.
Can I send a New Year's Eve message that plays?
Yes. Browse the New Year's Eve messages or open the New Year's Eve page, where the person you send it to taps the night sky to launch fireworks before reading your message.
